Lajares: A Quick Guide To Fuerteventura’s Coolest Town

Lajares is a small inland town located in the North of Fuerteventura.
It’s kind of sandwiched between El Cotillo, Manjanicho & Corralejo.
We discovered Lajares on a trip to Fuerteventura a few years ago, & we’d say it’s probably our FAVOURITE small town on the island.
We just really love the atmosphere & the chilled-out vibes!
You’ll also notice when you arrive that there’s lots of surf shops & schools around the area.
This is because it’s actually a really popular town with surfers (even though it’s not on the coast) – it just seems to be where they all go to hangout!
We thought because we adore Lajares so much, that we’d put together this short guide about the town.
Including how to get there, where to eat & shop + some other tips that will hopefully be helpful for your visit!

How To Get To Lajares

By Car
Whether you are staying in Lajares or simply visiting for the day, we’d say that driving is the easiest, cheapest & quickest way to get there.
We usually hire a rental car each time we visit the island & pick it up at the airport when we arrive.
It takes around 30-35 minutes to get to Lajares from Fuerteventura Airport.
Other travel times:
From Corralejo: 15 mins
From Caleta de Fuste: 40 mins
From Costa Calma: 1hr 30mins
The main roads to Lajares are all tarmacked & in really good condition.
Where To Park
There’s plenty of on-street parking as you drive into Lajares & a few spots in the town itself.
We’ve been lucky to find a space here a couple of times, right in front of the Lajares sign!
If it’s super busy, try this parking lot which is down one of the side streets.

By Taxi
A taxi to Lajares from the airport could cost around 80-100 euro. Then don’t forget you have the return journey to think about too!
(That’s why we prefer to rent the car – it’s cheaper & we have it for the whole week to explore!)
By Bus
You can get a bus from the airport to Lajares, but it does require a change in Puerto del Rosario, so it may take much longer to get there!
There are buses which run from other towns in Fuerteventura to Lajares but again it would require a bit of planning ahead – we would suggest checking the route & times on the official Tiadhe website.

Shopping in Lajares

Lajares has plenty of small surf-style boutiques & casual clothing shops.
My favourite is Joyas as it carries some of my favourite brands like Vans, Billabong & Roxy! You can also rent a surfboard from here & they have their very own surf school!

For the cutest home decor bits & bobs, don’t miss B.E.A.C.H!
Manawai Surf & Yoga boutique is another gorgeous little shop to check out with yoga wear, jewelry, clothing & swimwear!
Hiking in Lajares

If you’re feeling adventurous or want to do something active, then we recommend doing the hike to Calderon Hondo.
The walk up to the top starts in Lajares & will take about 2-3 hours round-trip.
We recommend wearing good footwear & bringing plenty of water for hydrating. It is quite a popular walk so if you want to go when it’s quieter, set off a bit earlier in the morning.
We did the walk up a few years ago & honestly it’s worth it for the views!

Where To Stay In Lajares

Lajares has a TONNE of really cool accommodations, mostly self-catering houses & villas.
You won’t find any big chain hotels or busy resorts here which we think makes it an even better place to stay in.
Plus it’s a really good base to explore the island from. There are lots of through roads in & out to other towns.
Here are a few of our top-picks, which we personally would consider staying at due to their excellent reviews + ratings:
Where to stay:
